Topic tags/keywords: craftsman jointer vintage

Last night I was forced to rescue this Craftsman Jointer from the local auction.

As I have mentioned in other posts, I prefer to use vintage woodworking tools: I guess it is the idea of using something old, or dated, to make something new. I have been looking through several on-line auctions trying to find one of these at a reasonable price, but I was unable to find one that was what I really wanted. When I walked into the local auction house, I could not believe that I saw this one sitting there. I had considered paying someone in Virginia $75.00 for a rusted heap that would have cost me another $75.00 to either drive to pick it up or mail it and a few weeks to restore. I was able to pick this one up for $10.00. For $10 I picked up a jointer that far surpasses any 4” jointer made today. I think that is why I like older tools: they are in-expensive and are a far better tool than some made today.

That does look like one heavy duty jointer. Good save!

Brian,

That is a nice save. For $10.00 you can’t lose.

Thanks for the post.

I hear ya Brian, I have a old Rockwell / Delta 37-290 4” jointer that is complete with the original stand, dust chute and motor, all in good condition. I have had it for sale here locally for $135 for a long time, personally I think it’s worth more and may just keep it. Delta sells a cheesy lookin 6” benchtop jointer JT160 with no stand and only is a two blade cutter for over $200. It boggles my mind as to what people are thinking sometimes.

Speaking of unloved tools. I see radial arm saws all the time for 1-2 hundred. I got one a couple years ago for $80 at an auction. It’s not perfect but I’m not either. I don’t like to rip with it but it’s terrific for crosscutting.
