Topic tags/keywords: question finishing refurbishing

1- When trying to raise the grain before applying aniline dyes, how much water? Do you you just give it a light spray or soak it.
2- Will glue stick to a water based aniline dye after it’s applied?
TIA

1. as long as the surface is completetly wetted it’s fine. No need to soak it since the small fibers are at the surface.

2. After it’s dry, yes. Just do a light sanding and wipe the surface with a rag to get rid of the dust.

One note I would add to Gary’s comment about the aniline dye is to seal it with a 1 or 2 pound cut of shellac. Once the shellac is dry then either continue with shellac or other top coat as desired.

Yep…just mist the surface…and the glue will stick….give it a light scuff though…better safe than sorry

Interesting Scott. I have never used shellac before except to seal the soundboards on my harpsichords.
I go straight to poly from the dye.
