Topic tags/keywords: ros random orbit sander bosch dewalt dust collection vacuum

I was looking at the Bosch random orbit sander, which now comes with a pleated filter. It is supposed to be very good at collecting dust without a vacuum attached. I have the trusty Dewalt 421 and was wondering if there is a pleated filter (or a dust bag that captures fine dust) available. Mine has the standard bag attachment, but fine dust always lingers in the air when sanding – even with the downdraft table.
I have tried it with the shop vac attached and dust collection was great, however the hose is like armwrestling a teenager. I also don’t like the horrible howl of my Ridgid shop vac.
Does anyone have a really nice setup they would like to share? I was hoping for something less than a $500 festool setup.

I attach my Dewalt ROS to my Ridgid vac or my dust collector but I hang a cord from the ceiling to support the hose. Much better than wrestling the unsuspended hose. Yep, the ridgid vac is noisy, the dust collector is quiet because it’s on the other side of the wall. Both of these methods work MUCH better than the filter attached to the ROS. I dont think you will gain much from a pleated filter

Thanks for the reply. I would have guessed that a pleated filter wouldn’t offer much improvement. Then I read the reviews of the Bosch ROS20VSK random orbit sander. It sounds like it has an internal blower that forces the dust past the filter.
The dust collection on my Dewalt 421 is actually decent. You don’t notice that there is any dust in the air until sunlight shines through the window. That is when I notice all the fine dust hanging in the air. Maybe I’ll try the Bosch. Another option is a 1” pliable hose from The vacuum hose came highly recommended in wood magazine, however when I went to place the order the part did not show up online. Even then, I would have to listen to the screamin’ banshee shop vac. My dust collector is hooked up to my downdraft table, so it’s not available to hook to the sander.
