I took a 5-day “Live Edge” workshop at Peters Valley in New Jersey last spring. The wood shop, the instructors and Peters Valley itself were all great (well, the food was nothing to write home about). I highly recommend it. You have almost unlimited access to a fully stocked wood shop, you have the help and knowledge of your guest instructor, the shop assistant, and your fellow students, and when you’re not woodworking, you’re mixing with and learning from creative people from many other disciplines including blacksmithing, ceramics, jewelry making, painting, etc.

Yoav Liberman wrote a two part article for Popular Woodworking that features my project. I will probably never see myself in an article online again, so I thought I would share it here. Although I had this project almost fully planned ahead of time and I brought the materials to make it, Yoav’s insight and experience and teaching ability really pushed me to learn new things.

1 – Although I had my bench plans drawn to scale in my planning book, he had me draw it out full size. This was a game changer as I was perfectly able to see the different angles, make adjustments and hold my wood pieces up to the drawing to double check my work as I went along.

2 – I became much more comfortable using different hand tools. Instead of always trying to figure out how to do something with a power tool, I now realize that many things can be done well and sometimes faster by hand.

3 – I learned how to mix, color and use epoxy.

4 – By observing and talking to the other participants, I learned other ways of thinking and making things. Nobody’s project looked like anyone else’s. Different skills and tools were needed by each person.
