Topic tags/keywords: finishing question

I’ve been asked to make a display box for a flag and a box for a family bible with glass top.

Construction and sizes are taken care of, but I was thinking that the “inside” that touches the flag or bible shouldn’t have a finish in case of reaction to them. Then, talking to myself some more, I was concerned about the wood cracking over time if only one side was finished.

At this point, I am considering a “liner” for them. Probably a cloth or leather.

Too much concern about nothing? The items have large sentimental value and I don’t want to do any harm.

Steve.

I would think a water borne finish woould be the safest. Just let it cure for a fair amount of time before placing the items in the box.

Perhaps a velvet liner?

I talked a bit with a furniture store owner in a coffee shop today and he commented that dresser drawers were not finished due to the concern of affecting clothes. In all the tables I have made the drawers were never finished due to this.

Flag boxes in the local hobby/craft store are finished the same on the inside as the outside. Of course they have no liability. The flag box will be nearly airtight and could be heated up if displayed in sunlight.
