Can it get any better than this?
I can do whatever I please online and elsewhere and for the paltry sum of $100 – $150 per year.
And they’ll protect me from ~ ~ ~ what exactly?

The flier I got in the mail says they will

“Alerting you when lifelock detects you information in applications for utility, cellphone, and credit accounts within its extensive network.” ( there’s a caveat)

“Patrolling criminal Internet sites for illegal selling or trading of your personal information”

“Helping you cancel lost or stolen credit cards”

Patrolling sounds so official huh? I bet it means zippidoodah.

I can cancel lost or stolen cards just fine. I only have one that I use, and one that my fuel oil company uses so the card says in a locker.

The Caveat is that they don’t claim to cover any thing outside what they call their network
Well that’s friggin helpful? WotZatMean Anyway?
It means that unless some creditor happens to have a written agreement with Lifelock then they are not in scope. So who is partnered like that with Lifelock?
Who the hell knows? I couldn’t find out.

But – - –
“LifeLock offers customers no protection against Identity Theft! They have a $1Million guarantee. The guarantee only covers the following statement, “If we fail to provide the service we promise.” They are ONLY bound to monitor new credit requests through their partner companies. Partner companies, are those retailers and other companies who are currently under contract with LifeLock.”
http://www.seanfinance.com/1/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=107&Itemid=120
That’s pretty Harsh.

No friggin protection at all? Their commercials surely don’t make it sound that way do they.
Maybe we should kill all the marketing people and forget the misapplication of Shakespeare’s Henry VI, part 2, about killing lawyers which was the character Cade, talking about how to destroy the system of laws protecting people. http://www.okbar.org/public/judges/spspeech.pdf

Anyway so how big is Lifelock’s partner network? They won’t say.

Seems to me I ought to be able to buy insurance from a regular insurance company for less.

Also according to the Fair & Accurate Credit Transactions Act you can order the credit bureaus to put a fraud alert on your credit that lasts for 90 days
http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2004/06/factaidt.shtm

It’s simple enough to do yourself you don’t need an ID protection company doing it for you
http://www.fightidentitytheft.com/fraud_numbers.html
Contact them and follow the prompts to do it Then set you crack berry or calender to remind you to do it every 90 days.
http://www.fightidentitytheft.com/flag.html

So what do people like Lifelock actually do?
I can’t quite figure it out.
I am pretty sure they just take your money and renew you fraud alerts for you and give you a jingle if one of their partners gets a credit app in your name (whoever those people are).

Lifelock LOL.
An attorney friend of mine was joking about this the other day.
But Cr1, I’m sure their list of partner companies is growing daily; they just need to EXPAND.
You can help them do that.

You can do the exact same thing that Life Crook does buy placing an alert on all of of the credit reporting profiles that will alert you to any wrong doing. Why pay another company a lot of $ for the same thing?

I think they need to be regulated by the state’s insurance regulators.
Listening to their ads they talk about it like it’s insurance but they have since insisted that it’s a guarantee – - they got sued

Hahaha, and the guy that started it has had his identity stolen at least 13 times since he started LIFE LOCK! Doesn’t sound like something I would be interested in…..........

If I spent time being concerned about all the stupid and outrageous advertisements and commericals that are out there I would never have time to do anything I enjoyed…such as my woodworking.

They have some sort of agreement with the bank that I have to go to for work.. Their pamphlets are everywhere. I mentioned it several times to the manager that this was nothing more than a scam—I remember the founder being so cocky that he posted his SSN online and on trucks in NYC. His identity was raped immediately—yet the branch manager said she can’t do anything about the pamphlets. Which is exactly why my money isn’t kept with them.

If you want insurance, get insurance. If you want credit monitoring, get credit monitoring. Don’t get a pseudo-service like lifecrock.

Now a service that brings you the severed head of the hacker – - that’d be worth paying for.

@Bertha – Oh, I know. In my line of work, the more you know about said skills, the better you can protect your corp from them. I don’t do any blackhat stuff anymore, but back in the day….

@cr1 – hacking isn’t always a bad thing. Even some “blackhat” hacking can be beneficial

@Bob – Did you stock up on gold too?

Out of curisoty, I checked into how this works from my end of what I would have to do. Her’s my take one it from what I understand.
My objective it to keep anyone from getting my social security number, bank account numbers, credit card numbers, and such.
So….
All I have to do is pay this company to protect them.
Then all I have to do so they can protect them is to GIVE them my social security number, my bank account numbers, my credit car…...........
WAIT!
What!
Hold on just one single dadblasted minute.

I got a better way, MY way.

I don’t give out my social security number all willy nilly. Too many places ask for it these days. Unless they have a legitimate reason for needing it though, you are in no way obligated to give it to them.

My bank has my bank account number. I pay bills with these checks. If that bank cashes a check without my signature on it, then its their problem. Yes I have had this happen. It is a headache, but you are not held accountable in the end if you did not sign a check.

I have no credit cards.
By the way, not having credit cards are also a great way to reduce dept. We can’t do like our government and keep printing more money to pay our debts. There are laws against that. What? Then how does the gove….. Nevermind, that’s another topic. (Focus William, focus)
I have a Green Dot Card. I load only what I need onto it for things such as online purchases. I do not keep extra on it. If someone steals it, they’ll usually get some crazy amount of money. Like for example, I think there’s like twenty three cents on it right now. If they take my twenty three cents? Oh, I think the amount of laughter I can have about that one is worth the cost. Then I’ll just skip on down to my Walgreens where I got the card in the first place and get a new card, with a new number.

Mostly though, I use cash. If someone wants to try to steal my cash, they’re going to get something I’ll bet they didn’t bargain for, lead from the end of a steal barrel.
