Hose requirement to connect 3HP dust collection motor to Dust Deputy XL?

I read somewhere on here which I cannot find but mentioned that when he installed his dust collection motor (not sure what HP), that he needed to add a hose in between the Dust Deputy as the suction was too powerful with the motor attached directly to the top of the Dust Deputy causing everything including the wood chips go right up into the DC and into the Wynn filter.

Does anyone know exactly what length or would few inches of hose be enough? I wanted to attach my Grizzly 3HP DC with a 6" to 7" adapter to the Dust Deputy directly. Worst case scenario, I will have to put the motor to the side and create a 90 degree bend (with two 45's of course) into the Dust Deputy.

Any information would be appreciated :)

I can't say for certain, but that seems a little odd. I have the metal SDD, and while my motor assembly is substantially smaller (HF unit with upsized impeller), the only time I've had poor separation is when there was a leak I was unaware of in the connections or chip bin.

I would recommend strongly against turning the motor on its side if you can avoid it. Doing so will only decrease the effective power of your DC due to the additional resistance of the airflow path. As little distance and as straight as possible will give maximum performance.

Simply, this doesn't make sense to me…

I assume you're discussing the Super Dust Deputy (SDD); as the smaller 'Dust Deputy'' is intended to sit pre-vacuum cleaner. Cyclones are inherently self-regulating; that is, only so much air can be pulled through a 4" or 5" or 6" opening; with inherent line static pressure and pressure-drop getting in the way: the line opening constricts the throughput. Putting an outsized impeller and motor onto a too-small airflow (limited by either the run size (6" or 8" main runs), or too-small a coupling hole) will serve to 'starve' the impeller. - I'm not sure I explained that clearly…

I used the SDD for years connected to a 2hp motor, and it worked great.

There had to have been a leak somewhere, probably at the collection bin. I have the SDD XL and a 3HP motor with no issues and it is connected directly to the top of the SDD XL. Once you have your system together, to test for leaks, get a candle and light it for a bit, then blow it out and use the smoke from the wick to go slowly around the dust collection bin seal, you'll be able to see the smoke get sucked in if there is a leak. The biggest thing with these SDD's is they can have ZERO leaks to work properly so do a good check.

Thank you all :) I did put the 3HP motor on top of the DD XL few days ago and fired her up with some chips and whatnot from the smaller DD I had taken off from the 4" DD. Worked beautifully. I'm running the intake straight along the wall and have some wye's and keeping the bend in 45's and trying to set it up with very little or no flex hose to avoid any turbulence.
