Is anyone familiar with a process for transferring a scanned/copied photo onto glass?

A friend of mine used to tape the image to the back of the glass and use a vibrating engraver to make a monocolor (white) image.

The only thing I know about this is like the heat transfer patterns I used to do for printed circuit boards.
It has to be from a copier or laser printer, inkjet copies do NOT work.
I just laid the copy on the substrate and applied a clothes iron on medium heat to transfer the ink from the copy to the pcb.
