Long story short, after two whole years without a workshop, and having finally slogged through a whole slew of personal and family catastrophes, I’ve decided that the best bet was to start over (run away) and move to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. I’ll be moving into a house with a separate one car garage that will serve as my woodworking, prop replica making and stained glassing workshop.
So the question is, where do I go to buy wood?
I work with some of the basics, poplar, maple, walnut, as well as the occasional exotic… that kind of thing. I like to buy unsurfaced and generally as thick, long and wide as possible (4/4 is about the thinnest I’ve ever bought for furniture)
I will also have to build myself a kitchen, so id love a good resource for sheet goods where I wont get gouged on price
And I need a source for veneers and thins (domestic as well as exotic) for some marquetry projects
If a suitable dealer cant be found around Nanaimo, I am willing to drive anywhere on the island, and even onto the mainland for a deal
The dealer I’m leaving behind sells mostly veneer, but they have a nice warehouse towards the back with large boards of domestics as well as a really decent selection of exotics. They let me rummage around in there for hours. This is how I like to shop.
Anyways, this may seem like information overkill, but when a person asks “where can I buy X” the first comment is usually informing the poster that they haven’t supplied enough information to get accurate answers
so, thanks in advance!
