Topic tags/keywords: lumber wood dealers nanaimo british colombia question

HELLO EVERYBODY!

Long story short, after two whole years without a workshop, and having finally slogged through a whole slew of personal and family catastrophes, I’ve decided that the best bet was to start over (run away) and move to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. I’ll be moving into a house with a separate one car garage that will serve as my woodworking, prop replica making and stained glassing workshop.

So the question is, where do I go to buy wood?

I work with some of the basics, poplar, maple, walnut, as well as the occasional exotic… that kind of thing. I like to buy unsurfaced and generally as thick, long and wide as possible (4/4 is about the thinnest I’ve ever bought for furniture)

I will also have to build myself a kitchen, so id love a good resource for sheet goods where I wont get gouged on price

And I need a source for veneers and thins (domestic as well as exotic) for some marquetry projects

If a suitable dealer cant be found around Nanaimo, I am willing to drive anywhere on the island, and even onto the mainland for a deal

The dealer I’m leaving behind sells mostly veneer, but they have a nice warehouse towards the back with large boards of domestics as well as a really decent selection of exotics. They let me rummage around in there for hours. This is how I like to shop.

Anyways, this may seem like information overkill, but when a person asks “where can I buy X” the first comment is usually informing the poster that they haven’t supplied enough information to get accurate answers

so, thanks in advance!
cheers

Westwind hardwoods in Sidney http://www.westwindhardwood.com/
They don’t stock veneer (except paper backed 4×8 stuff) but have a great supply of the basics and lots of exotics as well.

Also check building materials / raw materials on Used Nanaimo or Used Cowichan on the net. There are lots of little mills that cut Maple, fir, and cedar as well as some yew and others. there are a couple in Chemanius that advertise regularly there.

westwind really seems like the place to go on the island. do you know if they let you hand select boards, or are they the type that gets frustrated when you aren’t buying cherry by the pallet?

ill have to wait till i’m out there to check out some of these sawing mills, but its an exciting prospect!

They certainly let me pick through. Very friendly and helpful place and you can buy as little as you like.
