IF YOU THINK YOUR 15” PLANER IS GOING TO BE BIG ENOUGH FOR YOUR NEEDS AND PLAN TO KEEP IT FOR AWHILE,THEN BY ALL MEENS I WOULD SWITCH TO SPIRAL CUTTERHEAD. THEY RUN QUITER, NO HASSLE BLADE CHANGE. I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO STRAIGHT KNIFE. CHECK OUT (HERMANCE MACHINE.COM)

When I got my Powermatic 15HH with a true Byrd head I initially thought it was busted and not cutting at all, until the board came out the other side with a perfectly cut surface. That was like 5 or 6 years ago and I still have not had to index the cutters to the 2nd of the 4 sides available. The thing is amazing. See my review of this machine with a bunch of photos and video at the link below if more info would help.

I put a Byrd head on my Delta 15”, and absolutely love it. I do have lines the length of the board (usually) but they sand out very quickly. The best part is, well, there are so many best parts I’m not sure where to start. Just the noise reduction is almost worth the price. With knives and the DC running, the planer was the only tool in my shop where I had to wear my shooting ear muffs to reduce the noise. With the spiral head I just use ear plugs like I do for every other tool.
