Topic tags/keywords: finish armor-all purpleheart padauk

OK… I’ve never tried this, (scared to death to)... but I read this in FWW’s Proven Shop Tips (pp44). For woods like purpleheart and padauk you can apply Armor-All a few times before the finish to keep it from changing it’s color and darkening due to the ultraviolet light. The writer of the tip suggests three to four applications, and then use an oil finish, which is compatible with Armor-All. He continues to write that other finishes like lacquer or varnish may not be.

Has anyone ever heard of or tried this? Are there other finishes that would protect the color of these woods that you have tried? Just curious.

I read that tip too, Steve. I’m intrigued by it also, but would like to test it first on a scrap. Ever tried to clean that stuff off your windshield? But, I know it does have UV light inhibitors in it, so it may work fine.

Armor-All is chock-full of silicone. I keep it the heck out of my shop. It will cause you no end of grief with fisheyes as it migrates around your shop.
Having said that, let us know how it turns out! ;)

I know I wouldn’t use it. Silicone!
