I am beginning woodworker so I’m sure this is a stupid question to most but I made a small cherry and maple keepsake box for my mom. After I separated the box and the lid everything was aligned perfect (top and bottom/side to side)

I mortised out for small butt hinges and they fit well. I close the lid to the box and its now misaligned (not side to side but front to back) and it looks really bad… What did I do wrong so I do not do this in the future?
Thanks

I am no expert either. My hypothesis is that you probably didn’t evenly chisel it out, or you didnt account for the hinges throw.
Either or is a problem I have ran into before.

Pictures might help. Be sure to show the hinges open and closed.
