Topic tags/keywords: vets disabled vets pen kits pen parts wood

I have been and have a waiting list of disabled Vets learning how to turn pens. I do the training at the Vet assistance clinic by the Vet hospital. I do 1 class now and will be doing 2 classes a week with 4 class each day and each class has 4 people.

I could use your help.

If you are no longer using your pen stash or stopped turning pens, I could use them to give to vets to turn with.
I can really use slimline pens which I have bushings for, however, if the pens are not slimline I could use the bushings for those pens also.

I will pay shipping by paypal only.

I could also use some pen blanks that are 1×1x12 so I can cut them in half or regular pen blanks.

I would like to get 3 lathes and leave them there so I do not have to tote mine in all the time. If you have a mini lathe to sell let me know also.

This really helps these guys and gals moral and self esteem alot and if you could help they really need it. I used all of my slimline and trimlines pens up and can not afford to buy as many as needed.

Thank You for helping.

I can’t really help you, but not having any experience with pen turning, I have to ask, are the blanks something special? are they hollowed out already or something? Because I’m sure some of the fellows might have just chunks of scrap wood that might work….

And how soon do you need them? Because right now, I’m not able to do a damned thing outside of refinishing and veneer work, but I already have some lumber aside for a project, and maybe some of my maple cutoffs when I start working on that might work, but again, that’s not till a few months from now.

Scrap would would actually be better. Easy to cut blanks on a table saw. You can get a lot of pen blanks out of a piece of purpleheart or zebra wood. Also for slimlines smaller blanks would work. 1” by 1” would waste lot of wood 3/4” would be better….

Also consider getting some corian it turns pretty nice. The 1/2” stuff is a bit tricky to drill.

BobTheFish – This will be on going for at least a year and hope I can get others to do it also, So wood anytime would help.

WayneC – I thought of that also of the wood being 3/4”, however, the 1” gives more leaway for errors and catches before the mininum thickness needed of 1/2”. I went through 80 blanks before catching on to this. I am also bring in scrap 1” pine for them to try first before they turn a pen.

Thanks for the comments.

Those are awesome turning tools, I would like to have all three for myself, however, would they turn pen blanks very well and smoothly?

Does anyone have any extra pen kits they want to donate. I had to cancel the class this week due to lack of pens.

Just putting this out there again.
I need any scrap 3/4”x3/4”x6” for making pens for Vets and Active Duty individuals. Lots of them are for practice and the nicest ones to make pens with.
I also could use as many pen kits as possible. I have enough for 2 months or moderate use.
Any amount of pens would be helpful.
