Has anyone sold a valuable tool through either an auctioneer or an consignment business? I’m wondering if some collectible tools could be sold for more money through another channel besides eBay. Does anybody have any experience in this? What were your results?

Spicers Auctions in Rhode Island
Brown Auction Services (Clarence Blanchard at The Fine Tool Journal)

Both are upfront, honest to a fault. But… you never know what the final price will be!

I’d like to sell the old Birmingham batwing plane that I restored a month or two ago:

I’ve never seen one this size (larger than Stanley #8 jointer) online, and even though one of the sides is broken, the rest is in good shape and I’d like to maximize my return on it. It would fun to be a collector, but right now I’m more interested in acquiring tools that I can use, so if I can get a good return on this plane, I’ll have a little more money to buy some additional tools that I want.
