It would really cool to have a user generated woodworking Wiki as part of Lumberjocks. We could use it to document the knowlege of the community. For example, I saw a question about having a section for wood identification. This could easily be accomplished with a Wiki. I think it would be very useful and would bring more people to the site.
Tools and their use could be documented in the Wiki
Techniques - jointery, finishing, design, sketchup, etc.
Wood identification
Jigs
It would be a tab similar to the ones above. There would be topics or articles about woodworking…. Information would be provided by the members. It would be similar to wilipedia…
This is a fabulous idea Wayne!!! I'm always seeing questions in a forum that leads to new forum topics and so forth but older forum topics get forgotten after a day or two.
I recently started a topic about "rubbing out" a finish simply because I was asked by numerous people in other forums about this process. I knew a little about the procedure but not enough to give people the answers they deserved. If we had a Wiki section people could go there for quick answers to questions without clogging up the forums with the same questions or same type of questions. Then the forums could be used for more expert or precise questions or for things not found in Wiki (Yet)!!
Let's try to keep this topic fresh so more people will see it and hopefully it will serve as a type of petition for this Wiki idea…... Thanks Wayne!!!!!!!!
Having been a moderator on some large wikis, I can say that it would probably triple the administrative load. Once you start a wiki, it tends to turn into an HOA, where everyone wants the lawn cut in a certain direction, fences painted perfectly, and no vehicles left in the driveway at night. You may laugh, but content formatting and consistency across pages turns people into enemies faster than religion and politics discussions.
Perhaps instead of a wiki, a more structured 'knowledge base' would be appropriate. It sounds like it would accomplish the same purpose, but with a pre-existing structure and less administrative load.
here's my rendition of the "wiki"-now it's up to the members to add to the list.
