My mother has purchased a chest white oak have no idea what finish. The chest is lighter in finish than the other furniture in room. What can darken this chest without stripping and refinishing the piece?

Maybe you could lightly sand it and apply some Minwax Poly Shade. It has the stain already in the poly so you don’t have to strip the finish down to bare wood.

Tim, another suggestion would be to apply shellac. Shellac is available in several different shades that may help with blending the chest in with the other furniture. Shellac can also be colored by the addition of trans tint dye. If you want to go this route try color matching on an inconspicuous area of the chest first.
