I was thinking that the ability to chat one on one or within a small group we be beneficial to someone seeking real time help. I could imagine someone trying to fix a particular machine or conquer a difficult task where a one on one with a particular jock, who may have the same machine or expertise to solve problems, could come in real handy. I have absolutely no idea what it would take to create an option like this but it was a thought.

I suggested something like this about a month ago, but to be more of a chat room to just give you something else to do on the site. My idea got shot down quickly. Apparently there used to be a similar feature on LJ but it wasn’t used that often. Your idea sounds a bit better than mine since mine was more of a social concept, but I totally can think of times I would need a fast and immediate solution.

You could set a chat room up on an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) server somewhere (I’m fairly sure you can still do this).
The only impact on the site “here” on the web would be mentioning that the room existed, and where (and probably a link to some IRC FAQs to help get people going)

Feel free to use the chat on my site

It’s some free java chat crapware that I downloaded – so I wouldn’t go exchanging bank account info – no idea where the source is hosted…

BTW – Your “username” is whatever you want to call yourself in the chat room – no login/email/etc needed

You could also try Skype (or similar program).

I’ve also used Net Meeting with DaveR, prior to his departure, to learn about some of the ins and outs of Sketch-up to resolve a problem I was having with SU.
