I was in the Sacramento area last week and one of the local mills I like to visit had a California Sycamore (Platanus racemosa) he was sawing up. There were some nice sized pieces that weren’t really big enough for planks so I we cut some decent size chunks and labelled them. I figured I’d make them available to anyone interested. Since it was sawed in late July, the wood is still fairly wet.

For those of you not familiar with the wood, California Sycamore has a lot more red, pink, and peach to it than the American Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis). Here’s a couple pictures of the tree we sawed.

Here’s a couple individual pics for detail.

Piece A – 24” long ~5”x7”

Piece B – ~38” long, 6.5” x 8” at top ~ 8” x 10” at bottom – some brown pithy material at knot at bottom

Group Photo – C through I

These pieces are all “quarter round” so I measured both sides at the top and bottom. I hope this is clear and useful.

A $15 – 24 long , 5×7 top/bottom
B $25 – 38 long, 6.5×8 at bottom 8×10 top quarter some brown pithy at knot at top
C $10 – 24 long – tapered – 4×5 bottom 1×2 top
D $15 – 22 long 5×6 bottom, 5×4.5 top
E $15 – 21.5 long ~4.75×4.75 top/bottom
F $15 – 20 long, ~8×5 top/bottom
G $15 – 24 long ~5.75×5.75 top/bottom
H $20 – 21 long 8×8.5 bottom, 5.5×6.25 top quarter
I $25 – 24-32 long ~8.5 all

Message me if you’re interested in any of these. I get pretty good rates from UPS/Fedex so ground shipping should be fairly reasonable. FYI, I’m not making anything on this. Any money’s going straight to my friend Frank who owns the mill.

If anyone’s interested in any of the boards he sawed, they’ll take a while to dry, but he has some stock that’s dry and ready to go right now. Frank charges about $10/bf for quartersawn california sycamore. It’s not inexpensive lumber but it’s beautiful stuff.

If I had know you were in Sacramento, I would have waved… Looks like some nice wood.

What a great red color on those planks. Will the wood turn brownish when dry?

Beautiful red color. I’ve got two big sycamore logs that I was pretty excited to quartersaw, but now that I’ve seen your pink slab, I’m not so excited any more. Bummer….
