Topic tags/keywords: question cherry

I need a few suggestions.

I am planning two identical desks that will be about 60” x 30”. This is my first major undertaking in my new shop and I need some help getting started.

My wife would like the finish to resemble the cherry colored furniture that she already has and really likes. Can anyone suggest what primary wood I should consider for the tops, sides, and drawer fronts? Not sure that I can afford solid cherry (or even where to get it in the North Dallas area). Would a Cherry veneer be okay over some wood?

Your thoughts and suggestions welcome…

Thanks,
Hutch

You can get cherry veneer plywood, and then use some solid cherry for trimming it out.

If cost is a factor I would use birch veneer plywood and soild birch. Then stain it cherry.

My suggestion would be to see about determining what would the “cherry colored” furniture is constructed of. Then as the guys here mentioned, match the stain to the color of the other furniture.
While building things in cherry (plywood and solid as Gary mentioned) is impressive, and woodworkers love it, you may find a more economical wood. For example, my wife really likes a dresser stained dark cherry that we have in our bedroom. I didn’t build it, but determined it was made of alder. Alder is much cheaper than cherry-so the woman of the house may be more impressed with the finished color, and not the type of wood (as us woodjocks would be). But after all, our better half is the ultimate customer!
Hope this helps.

Hi Hutch,

I agree with Gary’s suggestion. You can try to stain other woods to match cherry but it is hard to do. In my opinion if you want the look of cherry you need to go with cherry. You can get a superficial resemblance to cherry using dyes and stains but they will not develop the patina that cherry does as it ages.

Hope this helps.

Hutch,

I was at Hardwood Lumber Co. in Dallas a few days ago and they have 4/4 Cherry for $3.95 bd ft. It’s all around 6’ in length. It looked nice. At that price, I’d go with Cherry. They also had 4/4 Ash, again 6’ lengths, for $2.50 bd ft.

Thanks all.

I had not found a place in dallas for hardwoods yet. Hardwood Lumber is only about 30 miles from my house. Thanks NorthWoodsMan

When picking a wood and stain remember that it will age different then the other peice. For this reason as stated above, try and match the wood type if possible. Veneer can be used and as long as there are not too many curves will be fairly straight forward.
