Topic tags/keywords: maple slab birds-eye

Really great to have found this wonderful site!

20 years ago, I purchase the slab and put glass on the top and used it as a desk. Since it is 7’ x 42” x 3”, it is extremely heavy; four hefty men strain to handle it. It is at least 75 years old. From memory, I paid around $1500 for it. There is birds-eye in parts of it. The glass simply sat on top and has been removed.

I have thought about dividing it up for one project or another, but so far, haven’t. I was discussing cutting a piece out to make a smallish top for a powder room sink. A friend said, that would be a shame since someone would probably have use for it as it is.

So, is there a market for this piece and, if you were me, how would you get the word out that I would like to sell it? I’m in Seattle; so, I suspect, it would only make sense for someone in the PNW.

Thanks in advance for your help.

P.S. I attempted to drop in a photo, but it doesn’t show in the preview. If it doesn’t transmit, I will endeavor to send another one because it is quite beautiful.

I think the only thing your slab has going for it is age.
If i were looking for a pacific maple slab for a live edge table commission I would pass on that one.
Its missing half the live edge.
Good Luck

The good news is there is a market. The bad news is your slab is by no means rare, especially in the PNW where Bigleaf maples abound. I built a desk 5-7 years ago with a similar slab I bought off someone in WA on Craigslist. I would say my slab is superior to yours as it doesn’t have voids and has similar figuring. (you can see it in my projects.) I paid $900 including him driving it from SW Washington to Eugene.

I’d offer it on Craigslist and I’d start in the $500-$700 range.

Have your say...
