I’m posting this as a “Heads Up” for you all while on the computer.
I was searching for a location on Mapquset and a screen came up that I needed to load this program in order to continue. They fooled me and it was late and I said OK. What I did was give permission to load Maps Frontier virus onto my computer. It is not a destructive virus but and intrusive one. It would pop up ads all the time and would not let me go to another box to fill things in with our starting a new page of ads and it said Compliments of Maps Frontier.

I could not uninstall it because they had the program so deeply embedded into something that it never showed as a program to work on it. It was constant frustration on every screen.
I finally took the PC into Comprenew here in GR and they cleaned it out and the computer runs like new again and I saved lot of cuss words!

Something to look out for…....................Cheers, Jim

Good info to know Jim. Maps Frontier will be on my sh-list. I learned the hard way myself before. At least my daughter was able to fix mine.

thanks for the heads up, Jim !!!
I use google maps and mapquest a lot – and have not seen it yet.
but – in a mentally tired state, I too would probably fall for it.
thanks !!

hyper links and pop ups saying I have to do something are a definite NO NO in our house
sorry about your bad experience and I’d now bet you learned something today. That lesson being just how valuable techies are
Thanks Jim
Have a better day

Dick, you are right about Teckies. They know the computer stuff and I don’t….but you can’t live without computers nowadays.
I have an IT buddy in Texas and he gave me some instruction but told me I might wipe out something valuable in doing so if I make the wrong choice. Murphy’s Law would have got me there so I took it to an expert.

cheers, Jim

Jim, glad you got it fixed… Did you ask “How did you get rid of the problem? I’d like to know…”.
Then you could have told all of us how to do it… :) LOL

Been there, (not from the same source) still reeling from the costly after effects!
According to a computer technician at Central Computer, my PC was infected with a “root kit” and had corrupted my PC hard drive beyond repair, had to install new one. Moving the noninfected files was costly.

My PC was corrupted by a self proclaimed “Microsoft” technician who told me that my PC was continually sending out Internet messages and it needed to be stopped. I asked if it was happening now, he relpied with a yes, I told him that my PC was not on at the time and then hung up on them. Apparently they got in another time and just wanted to finish the corruption.

I do a lot of stuff on my Galaxy Tab S tablet (Android based) and fortunately there aren’t many hackers trying to get into tablets as they would find out there is nothing important on my tablet anyway! I assume it’s not the same for the people using Android based phones.

As a note to others, Microsoft does not call customers!

I have received several calls like that… all from foreign accented people who were very hard to understand…
They are from Microsoft! Yeah sure… I do not think so… I have their numbers Blocked and they STILL get through once in awhile… The first time I got their call, he started telling me all kinds of things to do… Did not make sense to me… I said GOODBYE… and that was the last time…

I had one of those guys tell me if I didn’t follow their instructions they would call the police to confiscate my computer. Laughing to myself I said I’d do it as soon as my sows finished giving birth. Then I put the phone on speaker phone and had my children scream into it till he hung up. Took about 5 minutes.

Hi Joe. I would not have understood what they did to explain it to anybody. If you get it, take it a teckie!!

I get the calls from some guy from India all the time saying he is from Microsoft and if I don’t call this number my computer will be shut down. I even tell him I have an Apple computer and he won’t quit!
