I bought a bunch of Cumaru from Advantage. My order consisted of 2×4’s, 1×6’s and 5/4×8’s. The 5/4 doesn’t look like anything else in the order. I have a suspicion of what I think it is. However, I was told by the Advantage rep I didn’t know what I was looking at haha. Anyway, what does the darker colored board on bottom look like to you?

That’s exactly what I was thinking… Though I’m not familiar enough with Cumaru to know what it would look like if sawn differently

None of them look like the cumaru I have but then maybe my cumaru isn’t cumaru, lol. It was sold to me as ipe but doesn’t look anything like other ipe so I guessed at the species. I don’t think these names refer to a single species.

That didn’t take long. Sapele is exactly what I thought when I looked at it. It is really to nice to use as a top cap on this fence. I think it does hold up well to the elements from what I’ve read.

Bottom board looks like Ipe to me. A bit dark or purple to look like the Sapele I am used to seeing, which is a dead ringer for Mahogany.

To me it looks like someone mixed a board of Santos Mahogany with your order. It will have a distinct oder like cheap perfume
Might be worth more then Cumaru whatever it is.

Could be? One thing I’m certain it is not Cumaru.

It’s been so long since I worked as a Architectural woodworker that I can’t remember which wood smelled like cat crap? Was African Mahogany or African Walnut? Anyway, this wood has a soured smell when cut not like the pipe tobacco smell of the Cumaru.

I have to laugh at the Advantage rep. Did you send him the picture? Geez…..

I don’t have as broad an experience as many Lumberjocks when it comes to exotics, but I have to agree with Rich that it is a dead ringer for the bubinga I have worked with.

I’m certain at least one of them isn’t.

So I have a few more Pics.
Here is the raw board laying on top of the finished one.

Here is another of the boards that was milled Plain Sawn next to the other two:

Finally, here are the boards installed on top of the fence:

It looks like a purple stripe at the top.
