My wife belongs to another online community and many nights while I spend time on LJs she is on that site. The major difference is I am constantly having to change pages to see if new things were posted. otherwise there isn’t that much new to do. She on the other hand is constantly engaged in live chats with people all over the country (world?). Would be cool to be able to chat with other LJs in realtime. Hopefully you guys consider this as I think it would be a great feature to have. Thanks.

Agree it would be fun, but perhaps dangerously addicting. I don’t know if I can spend even MORE time on here than I already do, but would be neat to chat with folks in realtime while browsing projects, blogs, forums.

This has come up several times before, I think a fellow LJ set up a ‘chat room’ for a while. As I recall it was not used that much…but then again I didn’t use it at all so I may have missed out.

For myself my time to access LJs can be quite unpredictable as the dictates of family and work don’t really allow me a regular time slot to chat. The other thing I can see being an obstacle is the time zones that the LJ community is spread across, I am not sure which LJ is furthest west or which is furthest east but I suspect there is quite a range.

The idea of it is it is always available to log on to and chat. You may only be able to access it at certain times, but other people will be on at other times. Yes it would probably be most active during the daytime and evening hours in the US, but ya never know who are night owls and who from other parts of the world will be interested in talking

Another option would the ability to send members who are online an instant message. That way rather then a live chat room that runs 24/7 you could just send a personal IM to a member who is logged in and online at the time. Facebook/myspace and such have that ability.

yes, we have tried the chat room a couple of times and even did a live question/answer class on a topic but they didn’t “fly”.

In the top toolbar you can click on the “ONLINE” to see who is at LumberJocks currently and, also, there is a green box around people’s avatar if they are online.

I have frequently used the private message option to have a conversation with members.

I hope that helps.
