Topic tags/keywords: flame post vendors question

I just finished reading some posts on another woodworking web site where people were flaming someone who advertised a product as one of the first things hie did upon joining. Members wanted him thrown off the site because those members thought that he was stealing or copying another members product.
He read that and said he would quit.
Others got to him and suggested that that would not be in the best interest of the group.
Three years later he is a well respected member who does lots of business with the group.
Yesterday I read the same thing here with Louieleland selling “illegal” Phillipine wood.
Today his posts are gone.
I glad I got to him in time to order some of what he was selling.
He showed his product, has a valid email and a valid Paypal account.
It just strikes me as weird that a few people who evidently have no experience with the person/vendor are willing to be so causitc.
Is that why he is not removed? 10 responses do not seem like such a large amount to warrant removal.

Hi Lee, Trade&Swap forum is not for free advertising. Sorry.

I’ve observed that it is possible to subvert the rules and promote your own product here. One member, who repetitively promotes his cargo bag, has started dozens of threads and blogs, most all of which are to promote his product and/or direct you to his website, without actually abusing the Trade&Swap forum. For example: http://lumberjocks.com/projects/28076 If you do a search in LJ of his product name, you’ll see how often it has been posted.

^I knew Poopie would weigh in;) The art is in the subtleness, but that really reads like an ad. Cool bag, though.

I got back in touch with Louie and suggested that he display some of his product in finished form as a project of his. I really like the look of the wood and, as I turn pens and he was selling pen blanks, I bought some.
Kelly posted his projects and was able, as poopiekat recognized, to get his product noticed.

Earlier today I was reading a series of flames on another woodworking site. Same thing. Foreigner who doesn’t know English all that well, selling a product which, in that case, people thought he had lifted from another member. People had no firsthand knowledge of what had gone on before but were willing to defame the new guy. He, too, had joined a few days before and posted product for sale without demonstrating the finished product. Three years later he is a valued member of the group. And the person whose work he had supposedly copied wholeheartedly welcomes him to the group.

This is Martin’s site and he makes the rules. I respect that. (Truly, I admire him.)
If Louie does make projects from his wood I hope that he takes note and posts them here.

^I agree with your sentiments, Lee. I too suggested that he post some projects to avoid the assault. August was recently brutalized over his English-from-a-Blackberry post that was misconstrued. I, myself, have attacked people without good reason. I’m the first to apologize for it, though. We choose who we personally admire, and we differ there, but I admire you for bringing up this point.

Seems there is a lot of “good ole boy” going on. You think the managment is gonna ruffle the feathers of a good supporter of LJ if they throw in a blatant Ad every once in a while? As pointed out, it goes on all the time. I’m not saying they are wrong though. The ones that seem to get dinged are the ones that hop on, post an ad, then you never see them post again.

Ever notice how some folks post their own work and ONLY reply or respond to that? I tend to see those as using LJ entirely for their own gain, not giving back. I plan on eventually stepping up selling of what I make but I also try to give back to the LJ community by helping others out too.

In the end, we(including me) can throw conjecture, wave our arms, openly complain, or cry. But the bottom line is we don’t own the site, we are here just playing in the sandbox.

the guy might be nice, he might be good too, but he is selling an illegal item that is on the endangered list, bragging also that because of his connection to our govt make him get away with it. It is people like you who buys them that thinks it is correct and proper. it is just like buying whale meat, rhino horn and tiger skin. no respect for the world.

Xanthostemon verdugonianus is becoming rare or even extinct because the government is allowing its natural habitat to be used for other purposes.
To me that means that I am taking someone else’s trash and putting it to good use.

The Zulu’s used to do the same thing with the pink ivory tree.

Back in the ‘60’s they had to pass a law in Maine that you could not feed the inmates lobster more than three times a week because it was considered trash food then.

Sorry. I’m a tree hugger because I like to use trees.

Xanthostemon verdugonianus Naves. , aka Mangkono , aka Phillipine Ironwood.
Appears that they are sacrificing the immature trees as the mature trees are too hard to cut down , often requiring diamond tipped saw blades and days of work per tree.
Maybe there’s a reason that Mother Nature made them that way. Hmmmm.
Mankind is so greedy and wasteful at times ….shame on us !
Lee , I’m glad to see that you are putting to use that which has been killed already , at the same time , I hope that your supplier’s source dries up and not because the trees have become extinct , but rather because the government finally sees the light and reacts accordingly.

I’m really enjoying this thread, tension and all. Clearly some powerful emotions here. Rance, you impress me with your words.I’m lacking clarity in the “good ole boys” club comment, however. I’m in WV, so those words carry a bit of poundage, me being a man of course, in the club by definition;). Timber, this is clearly something dear to you. Dusty, as well. This is a powerful subject. I won’t further dirty it with my uneducated take.

I think it is ok to use dead or fallen wood even if endangered, but buying from these people doesn’t ensure you that that is the wood they sell? If they have customers who buy them, they will find sources just to make a profit no matter what. The government allows this bec there are customers like you who buy what you call trash Lee. best way to stop them is to stop buying these species. It doesn’t really require much knowledge to understand what endangered means, but it does need Education to know what to do with it.

Well, I think there is a lot of “Good Ole Boy” on this site. I see logs on a trailer and someone saying I sawed these logs then the next guy says I want some so where can I get them. Of course this is handled by private email from there. Now selling an illegal product is just illegal. Put him in jail. Send the Fed’s to pick him up. Other than that part I don’t imagine there was much happened than what goes on daily. I didn’t see his thread so that is about all I could say. Just LOTS of “Good Ole Boy”......... If the owner of the site wants to throw him off then that is his choice and not mine. If I don’t like it I guess I will start my own site. That is likely…..LOL Just keep it legal.
I saw a poster in a visitor’s center in B.C. Canada a few years ago. It said hug a tree…..British Columbia planted 92 million last year.
Then I visited a saw mill. Very intersting tour.
