I just restored a Boice Crane 6” joiner. The knives need to be sharpened. Do any of you LJS have someone you would recommend to sharpen them? Are joiner knives pretty much the same, other then length? Wher would be a good place to find new ones? Too many questions but I’m new to the joiner world.

i would first check the remaining width of the blades, if they have been sharpened alot then they could be too short.
i can’t tell for that type of jointer what the minimals are, usually the jointer manual tells you, but i suppose you don’t have it.
a new set would be a good investment, but again it depends on their condition.
i can’t give any info about where to get it done though.

Hey Clay, I have been using this company for over 25 years, always did me right, and not too far away.

Look in the yellow pages under sharpening. Many lumber yards send them out to a local services. Call some of the local cabinetmakers to see who they like and recommend. Kind of nice to support your local economy.

Plenty of places online to buy blades. http://www.holbren.com/seems to have good prices. Will probably try them on my next knife purchase. The worst knives to buy are the original equipment knives which isn’t a problem for you.

If you’ve got a Tormek, you can sharpen them yourself. Of course, the jig will run you almost $200 but hey, you’d be buying another jig, which is always fun.

adjust your grinder if you have one and grind on there then hone on some water or oil stones this is what I do and the knives only go for about $12 for a new set for my jointer, I also sharpened that blades on the delta 6” jointer at work and both came out much better than a new set. It was also free.
