Topic tags/keywords: chisel

hey LJ’s
i recently bought a 6mm Japanese chisel, and when got it through the post i found that it was a an angle,
i was wandering if they are meant not to be square or if i should sharpen this out.
i had inherited 2 chisels of this kind before and found an angled bevel on one but not the other??
by the way all three chisel’s cut like a dream and hold their sharpness like any thing, would seriously recommend if you can fork out the cash.
many thanks C.O

They are meant to be square at the tip.

Sharpen Japan chisels with one bevel. They don’t do well with
a microbevel due to their laminated construction.

Some Japanese chisels have a slightly curved profile that aids when cutting mortises.
Also, traditionally new chisels were delivered without a finished bevel so that the user could decide on how they want to set-up the blade.

Here’s a picture that illustrates my point.

Hope this helps…

Agree with all above. I’ve seen them delivered entirely bevel-less. Loren’s right, primary only on laminated steel. Nice score!
