Any one have advice about having a black walnut tree taken down. We have one on our back yard that needs to come down. It’s about 24” in dia. at the base and has a little curve to it as it is growing away from a large maple. It’s affecting my wife’s garden and she finally wants it out. We are in Cottage Grove, MN. I’d like to get some boards out of it for myself and maybe sell some pieces or give away pieces to pen turners.

Craigslist often has ads for people who’ll bring their mills to your location. Given the economy in some areas, these guys can be pretty hungry and a fair deal can be struck. There are some LJs here that are excellent sawyers. They should be able to help with the cutting strategy. Good luck!

Try not to drop it on a limb; if it crotches out, do your best to drop it flat on the crotch and not on one of the limbs, it will crack the wood top to bottom. If you can, dig up the root ball, it has the money wood in it.
