I was wondering if any jocks knew of a place around Canton or Jackson,MS where I could pick up some mahogany and possibly a little ebony or blackwood (if I don’t have to sell organs to afford it)? The 2 shops in my area have closed and I may be in that area this weekend.

I’m sorry I caught this so late. It’s Saturday morning, so you may not even see this before you make your trip. I haven’t been there yet, but there is a place somewhere in the Jackson area called Pickins Hardwoods. You may can find it in a phone book when you get in the area.
The main reason I responded though is to find out where you are. You said you’ll be in the Jackson area. Are you in Mississippi or near Jackson? I live in Vicksburg and am always interested in meeting other Lumberjocks.

I live in N. MS about 1 hr. south of Memphis—both of the shops that sold wood have closed their doors, so it’s tough to get wood now. I have found a couple local sawmills with good prices on domestic lumber, but their selection is very limited (you can get 3/4, 3/4, or 3/4 thicknesses). Fortunately, they have what we need to do the house trim/cabinetry that we’re currently working on. Ended up going the other direction—to Clarksville, TN for mahogany, as our trip south didn’t pan out.

I sure hope all is well for you down in Vicksburg, William. Been really worried about all y’all down there. Has the river crested yet?

I live on the East side of Vicksburg on a high hill. If the water gets to me, we’re all going to pool our lumber resources together and build an ark.
The river crested here this last Thursday and is slowly receding.
