Topic tags/keywords: cedar arts and crafts question

using Aromatic Red Cedar. I’m looking to build one, since I have some 8/4 stock to mill down. I’m thinking a Frame & Panel , with a flat top. There would be a drawer in the bottom. The “trick” would be to make this look like a small chest of drawers. The chest’s top would add to the effect. Until one lifts the top, and finds a nice storage area below. Maybe about 28” wide, by 16 ” deep, by about 30” tall, as starting points. So far, the only “plans’ are in what little brain cells that still work, nothing on paper as of yet. Might add a couple false handles to the front, even. Flat panels, or raised? Questions, questions…..

Since the only way I have of re-sawing is the tablesaw, the width of the pieces is kind of small. Neither bandsaw I have are any good at this. So, I’m looking at pieces about 3-5” wide. Maybe do some glue-ups? Thinking maybe four corner posts, and frames. One or maybe two drawers. The upper part would be the storage area, but still looks like just another drawer or two, complete with handles. Top will be flat, and look like a chest of drawers top. Molding around the edges, to complete the look?

Hardware? Brass, or something else?

Questions, questions…...

Any suggestions out there? So far, the only “plan” is stored in a few brain cells, nothing on paper as of yet. Wood is still in the rough, so that might take some time.

Ok, I’ ve started to mill some of this wood today. Got a few dry fits done. Frame and Panel sides, with a drawer in the bottom half. A flat panel for a top. A picture of the dry fit:

Need to find the sizes so I can make the panels. Those will be glue-ups. A “detail” shot of the corner joints:

As for the top, well, Cedar does have some wild grain going on, so be warned. Yes, that is glue showing up. I’ll take care of that when I level the top:

The “top” drawer is a fake. The top is a lid, open the lid and find a cedar lined storage area. Case size is: 15-1/2”deep, by 29-5/8” wide, by 21-3/8” tall.
