Many of you know that I’ve been struggling with my health for a while. I’m feeling much better. Having more good days than bad. I have been staying out of the power shop because ill health and machinery generally don’t add up to anything but disaster. Well, until very recently it would have been devastating not to be able to do my hobby of woodworking. But now that I’ve been getting into hand tools a whole new world has opened up for me. I can do hand tools when I’m not feeling well, knowing that while I may cut myself, it won’t be a life altering injury. I don’t have any illusions of becoming an expert woodworker, but being able to make sawdust while not feeling 100% is really an uplifting thing.

Long and short, I recommend learning hand tools. It will help you fill in some down time when you are not 100% and will add a lot of good stuff to your machinery work.

Good health to all.

Betsy,

As I have said before keeping busy is an excellent therapy. I agree completely with your statement about hand tools- NOW. At one time in my woodworking career I really did not use hand tools. After all why would I need a hand saw when I had a sliding miter saw that could cut a straight line whereas I couldn’t by hand. But I have seen the advantages of hand tools and am working on it. As you well know it is a long steep climb to become proficient with hand tools but one which provides a great deal of satisfaction. Like any endeavor we pursue in life to become proficient we must build on a strong foundation- and this is the advantage that hand tools provide.

As I have said before practice, practice, practice. You have a positive outlook and are getting better.

-- With God's help all things are possible- even woodworking. Woodworking is not just a hobby, it is an (expletive deleted) expensive hobby.

I agree, it’s been fun following your hand tools odyssey. Whenever I see “Hand Tools Doings” in my feed reader I get excited to see what you’ve done this time! (And I mean that in a good way)

I’m learning to use the spoke shave with the shaving mule. It’s quiet and rythmic. No electricity needed, especially if you work during daylight hours. }:)~

What tools are you using?
