I simply wanted to have a look at some of the New Profiles on the "Pulse Page" wanting to Post a "Welcome" to the New Members ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

There's a TON OF SPAM ON THERE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How Do You FLAG ONLY A Profile as SPAM????

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I believe we've been told a number of times to "Flag The Profile." How? I don't see a "Flag" on there anywhere!

The Profiles keep coming on the page as you go through them, but Generally there are about 34 New Profiles at any one time. 98% of them are SPAM!

Would it be safe to assume that there is NO SPAM BLOCKER In Use? That they just get left there as
"New Members?"*

Actually. I don't think it Interferes with anything we all do on here so why get all Bothered about it. Just don't have a look at New Profiles. A Few of us used to do that a lot just to welcome New Members to Lumberjocks.

That AIN'T Gonna happen anymore!

Best Regards: Rick

This stuff is not the same thing as spam! You are assuming that there would be a way for the software to tell the difference between a legitimate new member and a phony one. That is not the kind of thing that cheap forum software can easily do. Facebook, Twitter and other well funded gigantic social networks can even do it reliably. How would LJ go about it?

Most of the legitimate new members I see start with an initial question or a personal introduction of themselves. That is good enough for me.

Wow! I didn't know that membership required people to brag on themselves through posting images of projects or workshops. Forgive me if I am skeptical but I will have to take another look at the terms of service before I believe that. The only time I have felt it worthwhile to post pictures of my shop or my work is when I am trying to help someone else understand something. Why do you post project pictures?

I am not sure what the "Friends" thing is all about. I exchange private messages and emails with several members from time to time. I don't see any reason to single out certain people as being special. That seems kind of clickish to me.

Yup, no workshop, projects or friends but lots of forum topic s! Sure sign of a spammer!!! LOL!

Do whatever pleases You but I think your missing a Big Part of How & Why this Site Exists.

"Brag when Posting Projects" Nope! If no one Posted Projects where would this site be?

"Terms Of Service" Won't say anything about the Items You've brought up.

" Why do you post project pictures?" Because that's what the Site is about & others can Critique them or use them for themselves.

"I am not sure what the "Friends" thing is all about." That's for sure! It does NOT "single out certain people a being special." Nothing "Clickish" about it. I do it because I like to follow certain peoples Projects and Their Postings.

With NO Projects, Workshop or Friends as Possibly 80% to 90% of the ACTIVE Members do, You might not be Understanding the Purpose of, or how this Site Functions.

Like it or not, you often get judged based on your contributions. Having no projects and no blog entries to share what you know may not make you a spammer, but I and many others on here will give your input less credence.

Someone was recently posting about what woods were best and worst to work with. Much of what they thought was good or bad about certain woods made no sense and certainly didn't align with my experiences with those very woods. They also have zero projects, so why would I assume they aren't just talking out their butt?

Yup another spammer for sure! By the way LOL, means "Laughing out loud" Just because you do not understand the joke does not mean you need to become one? Most of the members on my Buddies list understand my sarcastic sense of humor, some may not find it entertaining, some do, their prerogative!

Yep, trapping spam forum profiles is waaaay harder than catching spam emails. Perhaps wait until a newbie posts something before you roll out the welcome wagon?

- Jon Hobbs
I'm a Moderator on a Caddy CTS SPORT Site. The fact that ALL of the Spam on Here has an E-Mail Address and/or Multiple E-Mail Addresses included with it would have killed the Profile right away on the CTS site!

It' not hard to set the Site up to do exactly that! Also on the CTS Site everyone must send a Confirmation back via the e-mail address they are going to use on the CTS Site before they are allowed to join.

That also does NOT happen on here. I'll let YOU figure out why. SO! Everyone on here that says it can't be done is WRONG!

"Perhaps wait until a newbie posts something before you roll out the welcome wagon?" There are Thousands of Members on here that have never Posted anything.

I checked that by working from the "Jocks" "Most Active" Last Page, Forward. I got tired of "0" Posts and quit doing it at about 5,000 "0" Entries at 35 Per Page and hundreds of pages.

Yea! I know "What a Waste of time!" I guess. But. I learned something else…................

As far as not welcoming anyone until they have Posted something …...... Good Luck! How do you monitor that?

So. With your Kind Permission, I'll continue Posting the way I'm now doing it now. How many Other Members are doing "Welcomes"? Approximately?

Not only are you not worthy to use this site if you don't have project pic and blogs in your gallery, You also have to keep current.
At least that's want I was told my one of our members. I was told I was not very creditable because I havn't post a project picture since 2012.

If I was more articulate I'd write 3 pages why I couldn't care less what people think.

I thought we already had a thread like this that got closed. Are we going for # 2?

No welcomes from me. Personally not my thing. I don't think many today are really looking for welcomes, get on a "buddy list", "friend", or equivalent.

For some sites are very much a social outlet. They see other members as friends. Nothing wrong with feeling this way, it just a foreign concept for some.

"I thought we already had a thread like this that got closed. Are we going for # 2?" Not that I'm aware of. As for the rest of your Comment I have no idea what Worthiness and/or Credibility have to do with it either.

"If I was more articulate I'd write 3 pages why I couldn't care less what people think. That's your Prerogative Isn't it?

At one time a "Welcome" on here was something 3 or 4 of Us did, it always seemed to be appreciated.. I and others enjoyed doing it. A1Jim had the best one, an "All Complete" one.

What you Like or Don't Like about certain Aspects of this Site is totally Your Choice. If we don't agree, there's nothing wrong with that either.

Thank You BOTH for your Comments.

Those bloodwood kitchen cabinets are awesome enough to grandfather you in for perpetuity, AG. Forget what anyone else says, I admire your work. You're a great guy.

Unfortunately, spamming profiles is pretty much the norm on any forum community. We do have code in place to help prevent it, but spammers are always finding new ways in. I can't catch every spammer before they post or that is all I would be doing 24/7. The first time a new member post a new topic, new project, new blog post, or new review it goes into moderation and has to be manually approved by me.

Please keep in mind that the pulse you see is not the same as the pulse seen by guests.
