Remove spindle from old Craftsman drill press (113.21371)

So I’ve ordered a new spindle and it should be here any day. I’m trying to get my old spindle off but I can’t get to the snap ring. It’s about 1.5 inches down in the quill and my retaining ring tool can’t reach that far down. I thought about sharpening a pair of needlenose pliers but those are too bulky to move around inside the quill. Anyone know any tricks?

My dad used to say that swearing helped in these situations. Not sure it worked, but he sure tried it a lot. Good luck!

There are ‘extended length” pliers, but kind of pricey for a one time use. Cussin’ helps, but usually won’t get the retainer off. Can you load it up and take it to a machine shop? If you get there a little before lunch, you might get it done for free just to get you outta there before break time. Even if you do have to pay, it won’t be much.
