Topic tags/keywords: jig tip resource

The “Reviews” section of this site has worked out so well, I was wondering if we could rattle Martin’s cage to give us a section for posting “Tips and Jigs”. It could be catagorized the same way the “Reviews” section is, which would enable you to look up specific jigs for say, the table saw.

Whacha’ think?

Dadoo;

Actually, I think that’s a great idea!

Sure will save a lot of time searching for particular items.

I think the same thing could be accomplished by people tagging their projects well. If you search for projects tagged “jig” you get 72 results.

http://lumberjocks.com/projects/tag/jig

“jigs” gets 14 results.

http://lumberjocks.com/projects/tag/jigs

I just think if people used the tags consistently it would be better all around but especially in this case. I think jigs are more projects than things to review.

I thought that this was discussed a long time ago? I don’t remember what ever came of it though.

I do remember something like that too Gary, but it was before the “reviews” section came out. (I did search thru my history but can’t find the comments…I do agree though that someone else started this same question). I like the way the “reviews” tab turned out. You can go and see reviews on just tablesaws if you want. I can really see this working for Tips and Jigs.

I’m all for that, it’s one of the reasons I kept stumbling across this site and joined! Now I’m here foreverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr…...

I had an Idea the other day about a tool maintenance section, where you could go to learn the various ways to sharpen your chisels or tune up your bandsaw etc… How about it Martin? It could bring more people to the site.

I agree with you. This would be a good idea.

Great idea…a “JIGS and Fixtures” button at the top
I think it would be used more than some of the others

Yep. That was it, except Blake wanted a “jigs” section added to your home page. Still I will give credit to Blake for this origional thought. Now if we can get Martin to build us one…

Dadoo, that would sure be a help for the newbies and a definite stop for me a couple times a week.
Most of what I know came from just such tips from practicing woodworkers/.

I can hear Martin saying ” Oh no, another indexed file I have to squeeze on to the main page!” <g>

cheers
Bob

Great idea it is an area that I for one could really benefit.
It really provides a good stopping ground before undertaking a project to determine has someone developed that “jig shortcut”——-saves a lot of research time online.

I’m all for it, Dadoo. That’s what I have been saying all along. I guess great minds think alike? Here is my original post: A Place For Jigs At LumberJocks.

It really makes no difference for me what kind of format it is in. I just think there should be a separate place just for jigs, easy to find and refer to without searching though all of the projects.

I believe that a place for jigs would be a great reference for woodworkers. A lot of people use tags in different ways or not at all. So it makes it tough to a good search and not miss anything.

Look how successful books and magazines are that are dedicated just to jigs? (i.e. Shopnotes) They are obviously a huge part of woodworking and deserve their own arena.

I’ve been advocating this for a while now and I’m glad someone brought it up again. When I wrote this Martin said that he wasn’t going to make a jig section at the time but he would keep it in mind for the future.

He then vastly improved the “tags” feature. I have to admit this did help, but I still believe a jigs section is what we need.

This would also be the perfect time to add a jigs section because of the recent improvements Martin has made to the overall look of the “My Home” section. The number one objection people seemed to have with my original idea was that it would “clutter” the page too much to add the word “jigs.” With the recent format change this would not be the case.

Please go back and read the whole thread in my original post (link posted above). There are a lot of really great ideas posted by the community there on this subject.

that is a great idea. you can use jigs for everything and it would be a great help to be able to have almost like a database of jigs that you could search when you needed one. or help other woodworkers out by putting up your ideas.
