I need some recommendations for a gift project. My good friend has been remodeling his childhood home that he is moving back into. The old back porch was made with some cedar posts from his grandpa’s farm, and his dad built the porch about 40 years ago. In the remodel, the porch was taken out, and I got one of the posts. It was about 6 ft. long and about 6 in. diameter. I have already slabbed it, and it’s drying in my workshop. It yielded about 8 bd. ft. (I’ve not figured that exactly, just guessing). I want to make him and his wife a gift from the wood. My first thought was a box of some kind, but that seems like a boring idea, and would not use that much of the wood. Here is where I need some help:

1. I don’t want to make anything too large like a cedar chest.

2. Their decor is not at all “country” or “lodge / log cabin” and many of the items I’ve looked up already seem to be in that style

3. I don’t want to do an end table or other real furniture piece that would not go with their decorating style

4. I don’t want to make a jewelry box type thing because it’s mainly a gift for him

I have looked through the projects here and scanned ideas on Pinterest several times. I keep coming back to a keepsake type of box, but I’d like to make something a little more interesting than that. His Mom had connections to Old Salem and the Moravians here in Winston Salem, NC. I have looked at many pictures of their furniture style to see if there were any boxes or things like that that I could imitate. I’m just looking for ideas if anyone has any that would be a good thing to make.

I would describe my skillset and tooling as high-intermediate to somewhat advanced. I’m not really afraid of anything except for carving. I’ve never really carved before.

Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

How about a clock…they can be extremely simple, or as ornate as you want. A candle stand can also be as simple or as fancy as you want to make it…Google some ideas….there are tons of them. Some sort of a decorate shelf can be in any style and any size. Same goes for a frame. If they’re Christian you could build a nice cross or crucifix. No carving required for any of them!

Let us know what you decide, and please post the result!

Derrick, have you thought about a rocking chair? There are lots of images for cedar rocking chairs to augment your creativity if needed. FWIW
