Topic tags/keywords: arch gate redwood

Hi everyone,
I’m building a gate for my front patio out of redwood and I want to put a small arch on it to match the rest of my house. I’m not entirely sure how to go about it since it’s going to be outdoors and in the weather constantly.

My first instinct was to laminate it out of thin strips from a redwood 2×4. The other option is to get a 8×2 or something wide and cut it out of that. That seems like a more difficult task and I’m more worried about the strength of it if I do it that way.
Here’s a quick sketch I did of it. It’s the design on the right.

I plan to have an open window at the top end of it that I’m going to set in some oxidized brass bars.

Any advice anybody could offer I would appreciate.

Thanks,
Tony

If you strap the top down to the bottom with 1/8” maybe thinner flat stock steel you shouldn’t have any strength issues. Something like a whiskey barrel if that makes any sense.
