Looking at getting the Oneway Talon chuck with insert (1 1/4×8) cross LH/RH threaded. Just wondering what y’all think about the thread strength (being threaded both ways) and how it will hold as far as any run out. This is for Robust Scout lathe with 14” swing over ways inboard 21” swing outboard. Lathe has spindle threaded (1 1/4×8) RH inboard and (1 1/4×8) LH outboard. Robust face plate for this lathe is threaded this way (cross LH/RH).

Nova makes an insert which is LH/RH also but I haven’t used one.
I would think they would hold up fine. All of my chucks are sorta wobbly threading them on until the end of the insert seats against the headstock. I don’t think the treads do much as the transfer of power is at the end. Maybe we have some engineers who have had experience with them.

At the risk of stating the obvious, it all comes down to precision and choice of material. 50% cut cross-threads in 1.25-ish 1018 steel won’t last too long. 75% or better in 1.250” 4340, carburized, now you’re talking.

Doubt if Oneway makes an insert 1 1/4” x 8 TPI RH/LH thread. Could not find one at thier site. They may make one special for you but not sure worth the trouble or expense. 99% of your turning will be over the ways.
Would not have any idea about run out. Just the cost of Robust accessories needed to turn out board would have me making something else work.

Might make more sense to get a Oneway LH threaded face plate. They do make have plates in different sizes(3,4, 6, & 8”) to fit your lathe with RH/LH threads.

If not mistaken picture of outbaord tuning using a faceplate.

I would rather have just left hand threads versus combo RH/LH.
