For years, I used a Black & Decker “Work Mate,” and was very happy with its features. Because it was one of the most-used accessories in my shop, it’s just plain worn out now. I’d like to get another like it, but the nice people at Lowe’s tell me that it’s been replaced by the Skil “X-Bench” (two models, $39 and $68). A Google search also turned up another item by “Performance” (not familiar w/ the brand).

I climbed up on a display shelf at Lowe’s and tried to use both of their X-Bench models, but the vise mechanism is hard to figure out. Does anybody have an X-Bench or a similar item? What’s your advice?

i use to have the long Skil x-bench that you could slide the tables apart so you could cut sheet goods down without cutting into the table. It folded up nicely but was really heavy. I had no need for it any longer so I sold it. It was a solid table.
