Topic tags/keywords: craftsman planer molding molder trim 12 5hp knives

Does anyone have any experience with planer/molders? I found a 12” 5hp Craftsman for sale. It comes with several sets of planer knives and the original manual. What is a fair deal for this tool if it’s in good useable condition? What wear items should I look for when I inspect it before purchase? What about parts availability? I want to make hardwood molding for my house. Thanks for the info!

How old is the machine? Got a model number? 5hp is gonna require some serious 240 v power.

It’s the Craftsman 306.23395/Belsaw 985. I just found the manual and some info on, but haven’t read through it yet. What’s this planer worth, assuming it’s in good serviceable condition? Thanks!

I’d be most worried about the availability of parts. I bought a used commercial shaper (a very ugly one) to make some molding in my old house, then sold it for $50 less than I paid for it. I was completely unable to find production molding bits and had them custom fabricated at a very high price ($350 for one bit if I remember correctly). If you’re strictly doing molding (and not planing), you might look for an older shaper with less power and no planer. A 5HP is going to draw bigtime. Good luck!
