turning a spoon rest

I want to make a plate I am turning into a spoon rest, how would I make the cut in the side, also do I do it before or after I turn the plate thanks

It is not clear to me what the cut in the side is for. A little more info would help.

a photo or simple drawing of what you have now – and what your plans are will help a lot.

for me personally, anything turned on a lathe that has any alterations in the sidewall
should be hand cut after all the turning is done. not before or during the turning process.

Ok Jerry I have never seen a spoon rest, I should have searched first but I always forget still training myself to do go to utube first. The cut in the side is so the spoon will stay in the bowl instead of rolling off onto the counter

something along these lines would require the spoon notch to be cut after
all the plate/bowl turning is said and done.

use the same food safe oil as you would with any plate, bowl, cutting board, etc.
as this is an item that will come in direct contact with food constantly.

after you get your plate turned, post some photos if you are not sure how to cut the notch.
I would probably use a coping saw for the initial cut then some rasps, files, round sanders,
(round sanders = various grit sand paper glued to PVC pipe of various sizes).
carving knives, whatever it takes to get it just right. then apply the cutting board oil of your choice.

Personally, I don’t think you need to worry about cutting a notch out of the side. If you simply make it with a slight depression without the raised sides, there is no need to cut out a notch, sort of like a coaster for a spoon. Like this but could be any shape (round, square, etc.). My 2 cents.

I have been using the dark one and a straight wooded spoon keeps falling off, curved are ok

very nicely done Karda.

if I were doing it, I would carefully cut the notch out with the coping saw,
using whatever tools you have available, make the notch as smooth as the dish,
treat with your choice of cutting board/dish/bowl oil and throw a spoon in it
saturated with old fashioned country gravy !!!

I have several wooden spoons made of maple and bamboo that are over 40 years old
and none of them have EVER been oiled with anything. a personal choice, I guess.
