I am ready to step up from a Jet 14” band saw and add o a much larger machine capable of doing some larger re-sawing to my shop. I have been studying all the different brands and specs but I am needing some advice on the amount of horsepower I need. I want to be able to relatively easily re-saw 12” wide boards and maybe even handle some green logs. I am wondering if a 3hp is enough or if I need more punch? A lot of saws have a 12” capacity but what is the right size motor?

I am hoping some of the pro’s on this site can give me advice so I don’t spend a bunch of money on an undersized saw motor.

bigger is often better but not many have 3 phase power so like everything, get the most you can afford, maybe look at “used”

the “punch” power is often made up in the BS blade, less teeth, more pitch, deeper gullet …..wider…....cut slower.

Im not a pro but my bandsaw gets a lot of use doing some tough jobs.I have the 17” Extreme Series Grizzly. It has plenty of power [with a good sharp blade].I just resawed some 12” Bois D Arc[hedgeapple, osage orange] logs and had no trouble.I believe this is the hardest wood in this hemisphere.
