Found it in the woods here in Northern Va. I’m fairly confident it isn’t alder.

I sliced a few boards out of a piece and was just wondering what kind of wood it was.

Looks like hickory alder

The picture is too far away, but It looks like Hickory.

now that you guys mention it, it did have a different smell when i was cutting it. so hickory sounds like a winner.

It may not be alder. But it probably is.

I’m going to see if I can make a small miter box out of it. That is if I ever figure out the moisture content of it.

I am not too far away from there, we have a lot of hickory here and that bark isn’t quite what I am used to seeing. If it is hickory you should be able to go back to that spot and see the hulls laying around on the ground. maybe even find some leaves that it dropped. I realize leaves on the ground and nut shells could come from other trees in the area, but if there are none of either than it might just be something else. The bark almost looks a little like persimmon.

The large medullary rays visible to the naked eye on the end grain indicate that it is oak, to be more specific, one of the red oaks.

Hmm, does Red Oak give off any particular smells when cutting it?

red oak does have a distint smell to it-some say it smells like cat pee. apparently i like the smell of cat pee.

that’s ok. i don’t mind the smell of skunks when i drive by one that’s been hit.
