I really enjoy reading and learning from the forums, blogs, etc…but I hate reading these only to find a YouTube link. Am I the only one?

That is what it has become. Many see YouTube as an opportunity to be the next wood working “sensation”.

For many videos end up being much more informative seeing someone doing something versus them trying to explain and posting pictures. I personally don’t mind the you tube stuff but most I find to be poorly done whether that is the recording, their presentation, skill set, or a combination.

It’s not just you. I don’t care for it either. I find it particularly annoying that every news feed story to have a video associated with it. I can usually scan the major points of a text in 5-10 seconds. I close the page as soon as I see that there is no text and several minutes of video.

Ditto. As soon as I see a youtube link, I move along.

In another forum I frequent, posting just a link would get you a temporary ban.

+1, I just watched one on here and decided I wasted 56 seconds and have no idea what he was talking about. Most are a waste of time, it’s finding the good ones that count. I don’t have that kind of patience. Some you know are worth it, most aren’t.

If it’s only a link, it’s annoying and almost always spammish. Forums are for discussion with links to compliment, not the other way around.

Obviously, there are exceptions., but these come from the active members of the forums.

I agree. Some are just a comment saying “Watch my video” with no idea what it is. I refuse to look at them.

Please add me to the roster of those who don’t like this APPALLING habit. Note to the perpetrators: While we are aware that many of today’s Americans labor under delusions of “greatness”, thanks in part to such televised rubbish as “American Idle” and the like, NONE of you are hand picked by God to be the next woodworking “Savior”. This SHOULD be apparent to anyone electing to post a video on line, only to have it appear alongside of approximately 30 other videos of other people doing the EXACT same thing as your “efforts”.
A few still photos accompanying a post are all well and good. Do us all a favor and SKIP the video links. As stated above, we will only IGNORE them, anyway.

Sometimes a video link is appropriate… most times not. What drives me crazy is when someone posts some obscure title and only has a YouTube URL link with no explanation or other reference as to what it is… so you either ignore it, or have to click through to determine if you are about to waste part of your life or not. I usually just choose the former :)

At the very least, make it a descriptive link instead of just a URL… like instead of just posting:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGbZqWac0jU

Post it like this:

Band Saw Clinic with Alex Snodgrass

Cheers,
Brad
