Topic tags/keywords: wood id walnut white oak cherry pictures science end-grain maple ash cedar alder oak

I am working something that would combine my woodworking passions with a little computer science. I’ve created a program which looks at a picture of the end grain of wood, and makes a prediction based upon other pictures of wood it has seen.
It needs a wider variety of pictures, and so I am calling all woodworkers to send me some good pictures of the end-grain of some lumber, along with the name.
The picture should be taken from about 6-8” away, and the wood should be either sanded or planed

Thanks in advance, and when it is well trained – I’ll push out either a web-site that you could submit a picture and or a mobile app.
If this goes well, the site/app will give it’s prediction and then probably ask for additional picture of the long grain if it needs to narrow down the possibilities.

Not sure if the pictures were taken from the distance you requested but there’s more wood pictures here than you can shake a stick at!
HobbitHouse

Very cool idea by the way!

Thanks Lane, and you’re right there are more pictures than I can shake a stick at. I’ve look at a few of those – and it’s a great site – thanks. Still looking for bigger images – but anything helps
