I need to find a secondery wood to go with chestnut. I am building a bed the the wife and need to find a wood to use for the raised panels and caps on the post. Looking for something that will make a great contrast. Cost will not be to much as the chestnut was free(minus milling). The bed will be king size if that helps any. Here is a link to a very, very crude drawing.http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j104/Al_Killian/Plans/Bed.jpg

A nice light colored wood like maple, or something darker like walnut.

a) I would treat matching woods with chestnut as I would treat matching woods with oak, as they have such similar looks to them (in fact, they are two of the best woods for fuming w/26% anhydros ammonia). With something as large as raised panels, you might want to consider walnut. I’ve been able to make a few smaller boxes with reclaimed chestnut and I had good luck with blackwood as an accent piece, but… I wouldn’t recommend making blackwood panels, though.

b) Let me know if you have any smaller pieces (shorts, anything about 24” to 36” long) left over from your project, as I’m always on the lookout for reclaimed chestnut!

Righ now the logs are buried under a few feet of snow. They will be sawn up when the weather breaks. This what I was thinking. I have a pile of walnut dried in the basment, which some will be a platform bed for my son.
