I will be traveling to Ephrata, PA 17522 the weekend of 3/28 – 3/30 and wondered if there is anything of interest to visit while there or if there are any LJ’s in the area that would be up for a visit?

My niece is getting married in April to someone in Gibson, PA…wouldn’t you know it, the groom’s father owns a lumbermill! I might show up for the wedding with my truck and trailer.

However, the most intriguing thing about Pennsylvania is the town of Centralia, in the coal mining district. Centralia is a once-thriving community now pretty much evacuated now… because of an underground coal fire that has been burning since 1962, and burns to this day. Smoke rises from fissures in the ground, which gradually settles due to cave-ins, making living there too hazardous.. Creepy footage can be seen on ‘Youtube’

Centralia is indeed strange and eerie. Where once housed stood there is nothing there anymore. A major intersection that once was the center of town still has the stop signs, and if you know nothing about the place you might ask: Why is there a stop sign in the middle of now-where?

Centralia is quite a distance from Ephrata though. Lots of Amish craft stores and neighboring towns and throughout Lancaster County, and for the shoppers there is always the Outlet Malls.

If you’re there on Friday night you can go to the “Green Dragon”. It’s a giant Farmer’s Market / Flea Market / Farm Auction and if the weather is good there will be several thousand people going through. It’s just outside of town on State Street. They even have a website . You can buy anything from antiques to fresh veggies to homemade ice cream. Or if you’re so inclined you can buy a cow at the auction!
