Anyone else think the ads on Lumberjocks are too intrusive. The first 6 inches below each project is now a series of ads. That’s what happens when the entrepreneur sells out to the money-grabbing internet corporation.

Well the site must pay for the staff, material and bandwidth.

That space there is a prime add real estate that should fetch more than the sides.

It’s either that or a subscription based membership.

I feel it is still better than many sites out there.

I haven’t noticed. Being on the internet alot it seems my mind is trained to skip over the ads and they never bother me. They are just part of it…..

Nope, don’t think they are intrusive at all. As a matter of fact, my hats off to the new owners for keeping this site free. My hats off to Martin for thinking ahead and realizing that it was getting to big for just him and selling to a company that is willing to work with him to keep us happy.

To me it doesn’t appear that the size or number of the adds have changed. One thing that I have noticed though is that there is a wider variety of advertisers in the same spaces that at one time showed “sponsor this page” or something close to that.

Lloyd, while I do see some ads they are either on the right hand margin or just under the tabs. I really do not get any interference with viewing projects, forums and their associated comments. I am running Firefox rather than IE so that may account for the difference.

For a free site as great as this, the ads are no bother at all. The bills need to be paid some how.

I don’t mind the Ads at all. In fact I found a Hardwood Supplier near me that I didn’t know existed thanks to their Ad. I’ve also found a few of the “Tools Ads” to be interesting to look at.

No Viagra ads yet though ..WAIT! Wrong thing to say! I DON’T need them! A Smile and or A Wink does it for me!!

After a while it just becomes noise. Too many buttons. Too many adds. Just don’t need more noise. Hardly even come around anymore.

I understand sites need funds to keep afloat but sometimes when you’re on the web 10-12 hrs a day.. the flashing and distraction of all the advertisements can get really old. There is an easy way to suppress them, especially if you use Firefox as your browser. You can block almost any web ad if you go to to top menu Tools>Add-ons>Get Add-ons and install AdBlock Plus or Ad Blocker.. They really cut down on the noise of ads and let you surf in peace. All your browser displays is empty space where the ads usually display. Give it a try… you can always disable the add-ons with the simple click of the mouse if you want them back again.

I subscribe to the RSS feed, so I usually don’t see all the ads unless I come to the site itself to see pictures or more of a thread. That takes the load off re: ads for me.

I’ve seen other posts about the ads, I have to say I don’t get it. I haven’t seen a change, I only get one ad along the right side, and one “barely there” ad at the top. I am a computer moron, so maybe whatever system I have keeps things at bay?

Oh, and I now see a small ad at the bottom, but I went looking for it. I love this site and I’m learning tons from it. If it takes ads to keep it going, I have no problems with that. I’ve been a member at gardening sites that have all but collasped due to going to paid memberships with few ads. When members leave for whatever reasons, the sites wither away…

a petty complaint. The ads dont bother me one bit…....nodda a chance

if its really bothersome, mail them a healthy monetary donation and they might reduce the ad size ?

I’m with Rick and Moron on this deal….. they don’t bother me at all, and I pay no attention to them.

Just keep focused on what you’re doing, like typing and griping about the ads….you’ll be ok…...:)).

Ads are everywhere. The ads I don’t like are phone calls from pesky salespeople desparate to meet their quotas among others.

It’s interesting how everything happening (or not happening) on this site lately can be quickly attributed to “sells out to the money-grabbing internet corporation”. I can assure you that there were no changes made to the site that I didn’t agree with.

And the facts about the ads are simple… we’ve removed one banner from the right sidebar that was visible on all pages so the total number of banners on the pages was actually decreased from four to three. One new banner was added instead but only on certain pages (eg. at the end of project posting) BUT this new ad is visible only to guests, members don’t see it. I’m really not sure how this change can be described as worse for the LJ members.
