Topic tags/keywords: resource tip

Habitat for Humanity, (H-H) was founded by former President Carter to provide homes for the poor. In areas around the country where H-H operates, Restores have been set up to allow the public to buy surplus building materials and many other items like furniture, appliances, lighting fixtures, etc. I went to the one in my area, (Gulfport, Ms) and they had some laminated beams that were 16’ long and a cross section of 16” x 3-1/2”. They want $45 for it. It would make a great workbench top by cutting it in half and make a 96” x 32” top. I really can’t use another workbench right now. I thought I would just mention it for anyone looking for great deals. Last month, I picked up a Detecto doctor’s scale there for $40. It came from a VA hospital. The government often donates surplus equipment to H-H. I try to make it there once a month. They had a Bose sub woofer for $35 as an example of the kind of bargains they have. Electronics have a 7 day return policy, so you can try it at home and if it doesn’t work, you can return it.

The one near me usually has some neat stuff but anything worth jumping on predictably goes quick. $45 for a gluelam beam of that size is a screaming deal, likely over $300 from a lumber supplier.

I stop by our local one every now and then, but have never really found anything I would want. It is a good resource though, and goes to a good cause.

BTW: Jimmy Carter didn’t found it. https://www.habitat.org/about/history

Cheers,

All of the Habitat Restores in my area aren’t cheap at all. Every now and then you’ll find a decent deal on something , but for the most part not getting much of a deal if any. I think they’re trying take advantage of the vintage rehabber crowd.

And btw the only thing that Jimmy Carter gets credit for us being The worst president in US history.

I guess it depends on the area. The one here in Gulfport has some really great deals. Appliances are a different matter. They are refurbished and being a durable good, can command more money. Maybe building materials are the best deals.
