I don’t do a lot of dowel joinery. However, I recently had a restoration project that required some doweling work. I purchased this doweling jig from Harbor Freight. When I tried to use it, I found that my standard fractional drills fit very tightly in the guides. I finally found a metal cutting bit that would barely work and I was able to finish my job. Although everything regarding this tool refers to fractional sizes, I’m wondering if the guides are actually metric. I have nothing to compare it too. Has anyone had similar experience with this tool.

The guides were fine, but the tool is horrible and doesn’t work. I bought an identical tool, machined with proper tolerances, from Woodcraft for $65.

I suggest returning it while you can. Reviews on Harbor Freight’s website indicate my experience is not isolated

The positive/negative reviews indicate to me it is a hit or miss proposition buying anything from HF. In defense of HF, I have found a few real gems. It seems when the local name brands get worse, HF seems to look better.
