I’m finally looking to replace the stock fence on my old Grizzly contractor saw. I’ve already replaced the motor (original burnt out, replaced with GE TEFC, 2HP on 220V); have a shop-built “enclosed” base and extension table with router insert. The original fence has extension bars for a 44” capacity.
I’m very interested in the Vega pro 50. Mostly good reviews and think that I would like the micro-adjust feature. Still, the praise is not universal, and there are some mentions of poor finish.
Next contender is the Shop Fox classic; a good Biessy knock-off. End price should be similar to the Vega pro 50. Nothing fancy (no micro-adjust), but I have seen nothing that raises concerns about it either. I see it as a safe, solid and reliable alternative, for considerably less than the Biessy.
Third would be the Biessy itself, but I don’t see much real benefit for the home user over the Shop Fox to justify the cost difference.
I’ve considered the Mule and Incra, but don’t think that either would be the best fit for my needs/style.
Also, a question about the companies. Vega seems to be a small USA based manufacturer of power equipment, with TS fences almost as a sideline. The only on-line distributer for them seems to be Amazon for the “pro” series and Rockler for the utility series. Neither carries the full line and accessories shown on the Vega site. It almost makes me wonder if they are being discontinued.
The Shop Fox seems to only be available through Grizzly (and Amazon fulfilled by Grizzly). Is Shop Fox owned by them?
Thanks for any feedback, comments and info.
