Found a JD Wallace band saw on CL today. Looks to be a very old, but VERY solid machine. He is asking $200 I’m seriously considering it. Anybody here have, or used one of these before?

The better targeted market for your question would be OWWM. That’s where the experts on old tools hang.

Could be a real gem of a find!

Kindly,

Lee

Unless it is a larger saw than the Wallace saws I’ve seen, I’d pass at that
price unless you just want it because you like old machines.

Assuming the bearings aren’t shot and no parts are broken:

The motor may be real old, you can’t add a riser block, and the guide
systems will probably be weird. Saw may lack a miter gauge slot and probably
has no fence either. Tires may be a problem.

Of course, if it is a 20” saw or larger, $200 may be a bargain.

If you just want a band saw to cut wood with minimal hassle, I’d say
go for one of the common 14” saws. I see them on the used market
often for $100-200, even the brand name ones.

I have a Wallace band saw, table saw, joiner from the 1920’s that I’ve used daily for the last 35 years my self, not counting the 30 years my father used it before me . They are a very well built machine , as for my band saw we’ve had a wheel made years ago , other then that it’s been a fine running saw . Am currently looking for a motor for my table saw which I think is on its last leg , if anyone knows of any out there please let me know . Thanks, Thom .
